We are facing an impending disaster of our own making, every day; we hear horrible stories of raising temperatures, mass extinctions and heavy pollution. This is due to our unsustainable habits and disregard for the countless blessing Allah has given us.

Islam stresses on Muslims to look after the environment and not be wasteful. Many passages can be found in the Quran that support environmentalism and nature’s conservation. Due to the various environmental issues facing the world today, it is important for all of us to do our part in helping the Environment.

Don’t be wasteful

Wastefulness is strongly condemned in Islam. Believers should try to avoid wasting resources they have, e.g. water, electricity and food and opt for sustainable practices.

Regarding this, the Quran says, “ But waste not by excess: for Allah loveth not the wasters” (6:141).

Plant a tree

From cleaning our air to providing shade and food, the benefits a tree provides are widely known and many.

Unfortunately, due to greed, trees are being cut down, disrupting the ecological balance and making things worse for humanity. This is true for Pakistan – here floods and droughts have increased due to their being too few trees to regulate the natural water cycle.

If possible, plant a tree and look after it. The Prophet P.B.U.H stated, “The Earth is green and beautiful, and Allah has appointed you [humans] his stewards over it… Whoever plants a tree and diligently looks after it until it matures and bears fruit is rewarded….”

Reduce Pollution and Recycle

Mankind has been placed on earth as its trustees and is enjoined to look after it.  The Quran say, “Then We appointed you viceroys in the earth after them, that we might see how ye behave” (10:14)

Muslims should not degrade or damage the environment. We should not carelessly throw trash on the streets and rivers. Materials should be recycled whenever possible and addressing environmental pollution should be a priority for Muslim leaders.
