Nescafé Basement is a Pakistani music television series which features live studio-recorded music performances by underground artists. The Artists are recruited and mentored by Xulfi, who is also the music producer of the show.
Internationally acclaimed show Nescafe Basement released the fourth episode of the current season over the weekend, which featured global legend Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s iconic qawwali ‘Gorakh Dhanda’.
Based on the Sufi verse ‘Tum Ek Gorakh Dhanda Ho’ by lyricist Naz Khialvi, the qawwali was sung by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and went on to become one of his most popular works to date.
Nescafe Basement approached the qawwali in a very contemporary manner, adding a noticeable modern flavor to the track. The song features Asfar Hussain and Zaryab Sultan on vocals, Bilawal Lahooti on drums, Sherry and Hasan on guitars, Haroon on acoustic guitar, Sharoon on violin and Arsalan on keyboards. The highlights of this version are definitely Zain Ali’s alaap and Xulfi being featured himself on bass.
While its almost impossible to reach NFAK’s height of awesomeness, it won’t be wrong to say that Nescafe basement did it’s best to do their bit of justice to the qawwali!
