Do Animals Laugh? Yes They Do!

And you thought only you had emotions? Well humans are the only creatures who have feelings, animals laugh and cry too. Life can be funny, and not just for humans.

Studies by a number of groups suggest monkeys, dogs and even rats love a good laugh. These species emit i unique sound in response to pleasure!

In fact scientists believe human laughter evolved from the distinctive panting emitted by our great-ape relatives! Marina Davila-Ross of the University of Portsmouth in the United Kingdom analyzed digital recordings of tickle-induced panting from chimps, bonobos, gorillas, and orangutans, as well as human laughter, and found the vocal similarities between the species matched their evolutionary relationships.

Nonhuman primates don’t just laugh—there’s evidence they can crack their own jokes too.

Orangutans Laughing
Owls, dogs, meerkats, penguins, and even a camel and a dolphin react noisily when being tickled! Jaak Panskepp, a psychologist and neuroscientist at Washington State University in Pullman, has found that even tickled rats make happy noises.
